Glenn Jones, Against Which the Sea Continually Beats

reviewed by dave heaton

If you're a fan of innovative guitar music, you should already know the name Glenn Jones, or at least that of his band Cul de Sac. But even if you don't, all you have to do is listen to this album – a stellar acoustic album in the general vein of John Fahey and the like. You don't need my help besides pointing you to it; you won't need my explanations to understand the music. Whether improvising or playing pieces he's written, his patient, searching guitar playing speaks for itself; it's captivating. And if the music itself isn't enough, and you need more background on the songs, don't turn to me. Just read Jones' own copious liner-note descriptions of where the songs came from. They provide emotional and musical context more interesting and useful than any pseudo-smart descriptions I could come up with for this thoughtful, moving music.
