Sweater Girls, “Do the Sweater” 7”

review by dave heaton

”Button it up / button it down / your dance is catching on all over town,” Sweater Girls sing, about, you know, “doing the sweater”. I hate wearing sweaters, for what it’s worth, but the dry and fun way the Sweater Girls sing about people buying second-hand sweaters (I think), in a little 2-minute lo-fi guitar-pop song? That, I love. The other two songs have this same barebones, high-school crush sound, with fuzzy guitars and drums. “Fingers Crossed” is a school-age secret-relationship song with some sass to it, projecting that teenage notion that “parents don’t know anything at all”. The closer “Haven’t Got a Clue” has some of that youthful snarkiness, but there’s a lot of the uncertainty and sadness of growing-up in the song, too. It’s even in the guitar playing, the way it rushes forward and falls back, as much as it is in the lyrics, where our protagonist bounces between crushing on someone and hating them.
