Amy Bezunartea, Restaurants and Bars

review by dave heaton

The opening song is a pretty little solo piano tune that’s also a statement of purpose, a rejection of “the things we were supposed to be” for what we really want to do. “I’ll take our life on noisy streets,” she sings. Those “noisy streets” of restaurants and bars are the setting for the rest of the album. Delicate, solitary ballads and a few jumpier melodic anthems chronicle time spent working, and hanging out in, the title places – low on money, lonely, but generally happy.

Urban folk songs mix with DIY indie-pop, and the occasional would-be showtune. She has a pretty voice, fairly high in range, that lends sweetness to everything. There’s a storybook/fairytale quality to the album, but also always sadness.

“Mostly I’m Just Scared”, one little piano number is called. The fear isn’t of rootlessness but of the difficulty connecting with people. Overall these are quiet meditations on city life, meaning also on people, the way they are and how they live. The last song was recorded live in a club, which seems exactly right.
