The Valley Few, self-titled EP

review by dave heaton

A bunch of familiar Minneapolis indie-rock names, including members of Walker Kong and Paul DesCombaz of the legendary (to me at least) First Prize Killers, make up the Valley Few. Their debut 5-song EP is raucous rustic power-pop, great Midwestern basement/garage/house party rock. Their catchy melodies have a tinge of bittersweet longing and plenty of recklessness; drive-all-night-and-never-come-back energy. Opener “All the Good Girls Are Gone” is a loud, singalong powder keg. It kick-starts the EP right, makes an impression. “I might as well leave my own wedding ring on / all the good girls are gone.” All five songs are quick and unhinged. Punchy guitars and a zoology angle (“Language of Lions”, “White Bat”). It ends with a rousing number that takes a come-on and makes it sound triumphant.
